What is Erasmus+ Job Shadowing?

Spend a full week experiencing Finnish school life from the inside. Observe lessons, follow teachers’ daily routines and discover how learning, wellbeing and digital tools are used in everyday practice.

Our Erasmus+ Job Shadowing programme is designed for teachers, school leaders, Erasmus+ coordinators and education professionals who want a practical, well-organised mobility experience in Finland. In addition to your school placement, the programme includes a Local Orientation, Lunch & Transport Package to help participants start the week smoothly and make the practical arrangements easier for the sending school.

Join a professional development opportunity where you observe Finnish teachers, experience daily school life and reflect on educational practice in one of the world’s most respected education systems. According to our programme survey, 92% of participants rated the experience as “Excellent” or “Very Good”, and 88% reported a direct impact on their teaching methods.

During your visit you will:

  • Observe lessons and teaching practices in Finnish schools.
  • Analyse how Finnish pedagogy emphasises student-centred learning, trust and digital tools.
  • Interact with Finnish teachers and reflect on how the Finnish system could inform your own practice.
  • Join a Monday welcome orientation at Oodi with Finnish teacher Ms. Jenni Sipola, including an introduction to Finnish education, practical transport guidance, Erasmus document support and, when several groups are present, the chance to meet other visiting educators.
  • Gain a certificate of completion and access to online learning resources.

How it works?

  1. Registration – Complete our online form to register.
  2. Practical arrangements – After registration and payment, we start the process of finding a suitable host school. Information about your placement, schedule and logistics will be sent at the latest two weeks in advance.
  3. Monday welcome orientation at Oodi – For Helsinki metropolitan area placements, participants join a Monday evening welcome orientation at Oodi, Helsinki’s celebrated Central Library, with Finnish teacher Ms. Jenni Sipola. The session includes a short introduction to Finnish education, support with school routes and Erasmus documents, and informal exchange with other visiting educators when several groups are in Helsinki during the same week.
  4. On-site shadowing week – Observe Finnish teachers in action, engage with school staff and reflect on your insights.
  5. Certification – You receive a certificate aligned with Erasmus+ requirements.

Meet Jenni, your Monday orientation expert

For Helsinki metropolitan area placements, Finnish teacher Ms. Jenni Sipola leads the Monday welcome orientation. She introduces key features of Finnish education, supports practical preparation for school visits and helps participants start the week with confidence.

Dates & Destinations

  • The standard format covers five days of job shadowing.
  • Available dates are from January 15 to May 15, and from September 1 to December 15.
  • Some dates in 2026 are unavailable due to holidays or exams:
    • Winter holiday (in the Helsinki Metropolitan area) February 16 – 20
    • Autumn holiday (in the Helsinki Metropolitan area) October 12 – 16
    • National holidays April 3, April 6, May 1, May 14
    • For high schools in Finland, job-shadowing is not available:
      Spring: January 26 – February 3; March 9 – April 2
      Autumn: September 14 – 30; November 16 – 24
  • We arrange job shadowing in the Helsinki metropolitan area for groups of 2 or more; these placements include the 7-day HSL ticket and Monday welcome orientation. Individual visitors may be placed in other cities reachable via public transportation, with separate practical travel information. Please contact us at info@visitedufinn.com for further information.

  • Note that in the Helsinki metropolitan area, the one-way travel time from the city center (central railway station) to your assigned school can take up to one hour using public transport. Your Local Orientation, Lunch & Transport Package includes a 7-day HSL public transport ticket, which covers local travel in the Helsinki region, including public transport between Helsinki Airport and the city centre.

  • 60-day access to Finnish Education Online Courses

What is NOT included:

  • Travel to and from Finland, such as flights or other international transport.
  • Accommodation, local living expenses, and meals (school lunches are included).
  • Private airport transfer or taxi costs.
  • Any visa or insurance costs if applicable.

Pricing

  • All registrations must be completed via our online registration form. Payments may be made by credit card or bank transfer. Once payment is confirmed, we proceed to book a matching host school.
  • Pricing (excluding Finnish VAT 25.5%):
    • Standard Erasmus+ Job Shadowing coordination fee: 350€ per participant.
    • Mandatory Local Orientation, Lunch & Transport Package: 190€ per participant.
    • Total compulsory price: 540€ per participant.
    • Visiting a different school during your stay: additional 100€ per participant.
    • Extra days beyond the five-day week: 50€ per participant per day.
  • Registrations made less than 60 days before the visit date incur an extra 100€ per participant.

What is the difference between Teacher Job Shadowing and Erasmus+ Job Shadowing?

Both programmes allow you to observe Finnish education in practice, but they are designed for different needs.

Erasmus+ Job Shadowing is designed for participants using Erasmus+ staff mobility funding. It includes a five-day school placement, a certificate of attendance, school lunches, a 7-day HSL public transport ticket, selected online course access, and a Monday welcome orientation with a Finnish teacher.

Teacher Job Shadowing is a more hosted and personalised programme for visitors who want deeper expert guidance, more structured reflection and additional support during the visit.
