HEAT Teacher’s Summer School
Elevate your teaching practice with the HEAT Teachers’ Summer School in Helsinki, Finland. This transformative program immerses you in Finland’s innovative educational approaches, offering hands-on experiences that blend history, culture, and natural beauty. From dynamic classroom settings to the historic Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, you’ll gain fresh perspectives and practical strategies to enrich your teaching.

A Week in the Life of a Finnish Learner
During this week, participants step into the shoes of a Finnish learner. The program combines classroom learning with outdoor exploration, shared activities with Finnish pupils, and opportunities to discover the country’s history and culture through first-hand experiences.
Activities range from hands-on investigations of the Baltic Sea to playing football and making crafts with Finnish pupils. Participants explore Finnish history in the “secret” tunnels of the UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna Sea Fortress and try moonwalking at Heureka Science Centre. Along the way, they experience how curiosity, creativity, and learning by doing bring different subjects to life.
During school visits, participants have opportunities to talk with teachers and pupils, ask questions, and hear their perspectives on everyday school life. Experienced Finnish educators help participants connect what they experience with the educational thinking behind it.
Working individually or with international colleagues, participants develop practical ideas for their own schools, with support from trainers throughout the week. Shared experiences also provide opportunities to exchange teaching practices and build professional friendships.
Participants receive free access to Finnish Education Online Courses to learn more about Finnish education before their visit.
Relax, Connect, and Recharge for the School Year Ahead
Alongside school visits and hands-on learning, HEAT offers time to relax with international colleagues before the new school year. Shared activities create space to reflect on the week’s experiences, exchange ideas, and enjoy Finnish summer life together.
Participants can unwind with a lakeside sauna and a swim, enjoy Finnish salmon soup, and gather around a campfire for cinnamon buns and coffee brewed over an open fire. Walks in nature and opportunities to explore the city’s architecture offer different ways to slow down, enjoy the surroundings, and get to know fellow educators.
The aim is to leave HEAT feeling inspired and rested—with fresh ideas for the classroom, new professional friendships, and renewed energy for the school year ahead.

ACCOMMODATION
You will find the provisional course venue addresses for Helsinki courses here. The exact venue address is confirmed once the final group size and practical arrangements are known, typically 1–2 weeks before the course. Then the trainer will contact all participants about the final venue address and detailed instructions on how to reach it.
Therefore, we recommend booking accommodation in a central and well-connected area of the city, which allows easy access to the course location once the address is shared. Once you’ve registered, we’ll provide you with a list of our partner hotels and their discount codes. We partner, for example, with Omena hotels. With our code, it’s around 60€/night for a twin room in the heart of Helsinki.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT HELSINKI

Is Helsinki the coolest city in the world?
Probably yes! In the capital of Finland, you can find the influence of both our neighbors, Sweden and Russia, but still the city is unique. It’s a modern metropolis with 700, 000 inhabitants (1,5 million in the larger metropolitan area) and yet you are never more than a 10-minute walk from nature. On the same day, you can pick berries in a forest and go to the Opera. Helsinki is a lively big city that never sleeps, but so safe that you can see 7-year-old first graders take the tram to school on their own.
Feeling the fresh breeze of the Baltic Sea while wandering around the picturesque streets of this easy-going city, it is not so difficult to imagine why Finns are the happiest nation in the world. After the walk, warm yourself up with a cup of coffee and a cinnamon bun. These coffee breaks with friends and colleagues are almost sacred moments to Finns.
While in Helsinki, check out the libraries as a social innovation in Finnish education, interactive museums, the islands around Helsinki and the sauna. There are many more attractions that promise an unforgettable experience in Helsinki, such as Alvar Aalto’s studio, Helsinki Cathedral by Carl Ludvig Engel, Senate Square, Old Market Hall, Löyly sauna and restaurant, and much more.

Teachers were great and a lot of knowledge was shared. Thank you for the opportunity!
I learned the importance of teachers responding sincerely to what the children have to say.
This was a valuable experience because I could implement that into my work with pupils.
This was very useful and inspiring experience because I learned some new ways to teach children with disabilities I work with.
I learned about that we have to guide the children rather then we prepare everything for them.
I learned about leaving children independent and calme environment
I learn about that they leave the children in Independent
I learned about better sharing of common spaces, a more convivial relationship between teachers and students and a different organisation of school time
Un’esperienza sicuramente positiva, acquisizione di nuovi metodi d’insegnamento da poter adottare anche nel mio paese
È stata un’esperienza importante per migliorare alcune pratiche e per dare un migliore servizio agli studenti ed alle famiglie
It was a wonderful experience because I saw a reality very different from ours and had the opportunity to take some constructive ideas to adapt to our own context
This was and incredible experience that gives you the opportunity to come back home with a new knowledge about your specific work area. Just opens your mind
An interesting conference and the value of the venue (Rovaniemi) where, despite the harsh climate, the people are very friendly, patient, and professional.
A great program, lovely people. You don’t learn only a method, but a philosophy of life as well. It’s worth learning from the Finnish people. Wonderful encounters.
A fantastic adventure….fell in love with Finland 😘
Great chance to meet and get in contact with teachers from all over the world!
